Albums of the Quarter #01
In typical blogging fashion, I decided to share the albums I discovered/most listened to/really enjoyed during the past few months.
And these months, I’ve gone through a few phases:
- Punk
- Jazz
- Bossa Nova
- Phil Collins (American Psycho really did me)
- Emo/hardcore
- Indie alternative
- French Pop
Yes, just a little diverse, right?
Let me break it down:

To wake up, I listened to Rancid a looooot while at the gym, and I have come to the conclusion that it is the perfect music for lifting weights. It’s heavy, energetic, but uplifting, unlike most punk, or metal songs I used to listen to pump me up.
To slow down, I listened to jazz and bossa nova, like Bill Evans Trio, or Joe Pass. It’s the perfect music for reading literature. Especially Bill Evans. It’s the kind of music that won’t get in your way. In fact, it will help you flow, and keep you in flow. Absolutely recommend it.
During some period, while I was reading American Psycho, I couldn’t seem to focus with jazz, or bossa nova. In the movie, one of the soundtracks is a Phil Collins record, so for some time, I resorted to that.
Then came the concerts.
I’ve been to two festivals this year, and it was a great experience. Got to watch some of my favorite bands from my teenage years, like Blink 182, Simple Plan, A Day to Remember, All Time Low, The Offspring, etc. Naturally, that’s what I listened to for some time.
After some time, my mood for the music I knew dried up.
Do you ever get that feeling that nothing satisfies you musically? Nothing matches the vibe, really.
Some weeks back, while browsing YouTube for photography videos, Bennett Coast showed up on the list, with some great music, and videos he produced himself. Which was the perfect inspiration I needed to put me on a path of creativity again.
That led me to find other artists, like Surf Curse, Hollow Coves, The Paper Kites, Famous Friend, L’impératrice, and Voyou. All of which have had albums ringing on repeat in my ears.
Now, on to the music:
If you like any of the small albums, consider purchasing some of their albums or songs on iTunes, or CD. It helps these upcoming artists a lot.
