Learning Music in 2025
It is the New Year!
And this year, I want to learn more about music. More specifically, about producing music from start to finish. I have it high up on my INs for this year: “synths”.
I see people like Matt (mds) playing guitar, and Novikov on X jamming crazy good tracks with his Teenage Engineering equipment, and it made me think: what if I also can perform that well?
I already play guitar, and always had an interest in learning piano, theory, and production (with DAWs). Why not do it myself?
So I’m doing it.
First purchase: the KORG Minilogue OG. It’s a 10 year old analogue synth that seems perfect for beginners. It also looks very 80s, and soviet, as if you’re tweaking the knobs of a nuclear power plant. So fucking cool.
I already own an Arturia Minilab3 MIDI keyboard, and I believe the Minilogue will be a nice addition to the setup.
The next step will be to purchase a sequencer for a better DAWless setup, and I am considering:
- Elektron model:cycles
- Yamaka seqtrak
Ultimately, I feel excited about the journey ahead. I do not care about whether I will get appraisal or monetary return from this journey. All I care about is enjoying a hobby, and improving my technical abilities.
Yes, AI is here to stay, and it will likely produce better music than me, faster than I can, but if won’t be able to make me experience the journey of learning new instruments.
If you have thoughts on either one of the sequencers I mentioned, please ping me on X,
I’d love to discuss!
